Safety and Aquatic Training

Become a lifesaver!

The White Plains YMCA is a proud provider of the American Red Cross Health & Safety and Aquatic Training programs. Our courses are offered year round to both members and non-members and include both full courses and/or re-certification/renewal courses.

Upcoming Courses:

Lifeguard Training (Cost $450)

The American red cross lifeguarding course is to provide entry level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies, and to provide professional level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) Personnel arrive and take over.

Prerequisites:

You must be able to meet the following physical requirements to pass the course;
1) Must be 15 years old or older before the final scheduled session of the course.
2) Swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed.
3) Tread water for 2 min using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under armpits or out of water.
4) Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: staring point with both hands holding object and keeping the face at or near the surface and swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive , feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10– pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yard on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using ladder or steps.

*Note* We can conduct evaluations for the training in case if you are unsure if you can pass the physical requirements. To schedule an evaluation please contact Rickey Richard at rrichard@ymca-cnw.org or at (914) 949-8030 Ext 227

Lifeguard re-certfication is done at a reduced rate of $300 for the two days and focuses on reviewing key practical skills both in the water and on land.

CPR, AED & FIRST AID Training

CPR/AED training provides basic life-saving training including CPR, the use of an AED, and the relief of choking for adult, child and infant patients. The goal of this skills-based training is to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond in a medical emergency.
